A major aspect of the musical component of the ArtReach program is our collaboration with the non-profit organization, Instruments 4 Life. They have brought keyboard, ukulele, and guitar lessons to many of the youth in our community centers. Not only are the youth learning a new instrument, but they also have the opportunity to earn their very own guitar, ukulele, or keyboard by mentoring students who are just beginning. Instruments 4 Life, and we, feel it is important to allow students to mentor others as it gives them the chance to share their knowledge and creativity while building their confidence and cultivating their patience. At the same time, they are teaching their peers by tapping into their own learning experiences.
The music element of this program is not just about learning how to play instruments. It also involves learning about the art of songwriting and recording. Instruments 4 Life is working with students to create original songs inspired by their community centers. Currently, we are working to compile an album of these songs by having students record them in a studio.
At the end of the music sessions, it is time for students to show off how their hard work and dedication has paid off. Through showcases for family and friends, students can demonstrate the skills they learned from the professional artists that teach these classes. These music students have also had the opportunity to perform at community events including our Santa Fest celebration and the East Tampa Tree Lighting.
